There are a TON of parenting books out there. I know this because I had to use TWO trash bags to throw away all of mine.
Two Lines = Study Time
I have a confession to make: I’m a bit of a nerd (and proud of it). I love reading and learning and school and all that great stuff. So the first time I found out I was pregnant I hit the books and started studying up on how to be the best mom ever. I researched the best books to read, asked friends for recommendations, and Googled everything. Before long my bookshelves were filled with titles like The Happiest Baby on the Block, On Becoming Baby Wise, Secrets of the Baby Whisperer, Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, and Twelve Hours’ Sleep by Twelve Weeks Old. Seriously, I owned Every. Single. One.
And I read them, too. Or at least I tried. You see, the funniest thing happened: the more I read the more confused I became. None of these “experts” seemed to agree on anything. Just as soon as I discovered some piece of advice that I liked from one book I would discover another piece of advice in another book that debunked the first piece. This insanity continued for a couple of months…a couple of long, exhaustive, hormone-filled months that included several breakdowns that left the front of my shirt soaking wet due to excessive crying.
So, there I was. Very pregnant without a clue as to how to be a good mother to this child that was growing inside of me. [Read more…]
